What is Cyber-Addiction?

Cyber-Addiction (also referred to as Internet Addiction, Technology Addiction or Digital Addiction) can be defined as, “the obsessive use of mobile devices, the internet, or video games despite negative consequences to the user of the technology.”

Why is this happening? Why does this matter?

Unfortunately, with the proliferation of mobile devices and strategically designed digital entertainment media, many people have become powerless to the compelling and addictive nature of these technologies, spending more time on-line than in real-life interactions.

Research has shown that this overuse of entertainment technology can result in serious and potentially long-term negative impacts on mental and physical health, social skills, empathy and emotional intelligence and neurological development.

This is particularly concerning and relevant as studies show that more and more young children (as young as 2 years old) are being introduced to mobile devices and this type of digital media, despite the cautions of the American Pediatric Association, Doctors, Mental Health Professionals, Researchers and Educators with expertise in this area.

Our collective exposure to and reliance upon technology has become so pervasive that it is challenging (sometimes seemingly impossible) for many people to unplug, disconnect and fully engage in real-life conversation and experiences.  Smartphones, Massively Multiplayer On-Line Roleplaying Games (MMOPRGs), Social Media Platforms and Video Streaming have radically transformed youth culture and manipulate our behavior without our awareness.  Despite these realities, it is a commonly held belief that our constant interface with our screens and the resulting distraction, multi-tasking, diminished real-life conversation and perpetual on-line connection is normal in today’s digital age.
